Holiday Kick-off

Please join us on Sunday, November 1, 2009 for our Holiday Kick-off Open House from 1 - 5 pm.

The store has has a fresh, new look and several new artists have recently joined us. Some of them will be demonstrating their special talents.

Robert H. Miller will also be on hand to sign his newly published book Finding My Father's War which chronicles the experience of his father, Herbert Henry Miller, in a Nazi POW camp in World War II.

After discovering his father's Red Cross war diary shortly after his death, Robert began a three-year effort that took him across the United States and Europe researching archives and interviewing WW II survivors and their families.

August Featured Artist

The multi-talented mixed media and calligraphic artist Patti Monroe-Mohrenweiser is Art-is-in Market's featured artist for August.

Patti often takes the term "mixed media" to the next level. A lettering artist by true definition, she is always working to develop creative new ways to express the written word. This month's collection does not disappoint and features both encaustic and printmaking techniques.

Encaustic is an age-old art form using beeswax, resin, and colored pigments as the painting medium. These luminous layers offer a unique and original work of art. Many of the pieces include vintage hymn pages which add to the old-world feel.
Van Dyke prints, lithographs, and serigraphs printed on handmade paper round out this month's collection. All of the pieces are hand-created by Patti, who uses images ranging from angels to city streetscapes. Many of the images are printed in a sepia tone which blend well with the vintage themes.
In addition to the beautiful new framed works currently featured in our window, Patti has a large assortment of other framed and unframed works plus a collection of unusual decorative pieces.

July Featured Artist

Lynn Edwards Newman, who has been with Art-is-in Market from its inception, is our featured artist for July. Here's how she describes her artistic outlook and process:

"I have been drawing and painting as far back as I can remember. As a child I would create for the sheer joy of it, as well as a method of expressing sadness and pain. This, along with my love for people, is why I studied to become an art therapist. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Michigan State University and a Master of Education with certification in Art Therapy.

"My paintings all emerge from within me and grow out of themselves. It is truly a process that evolves over time. It can take me a few days or many years to complete a painting. Usually I am working on several paintings at one time. I sometimes put a painting away and don’t look at it for days, or even weeks, so that when I look at it again, it is with a fresh eye. The most rewarding times are when a painting just flows from me and there is no separation between me and my work. It literally gracefully flows through me.

"I use acrylic paints and other materials to create my effects. The colors, textures, and images are layered using a glazing technique to create rich hues and values forming shapes and space. Playing with hues, values, and texture create depth and movement. The movement and spatial relationships within the painting make continuous connections. As in life, there are no distinct separations between people, nature, and our environment. I am fascinated by the interdependency of all life forms.

"Creating is a method of self-exploration for the artist and the viewer. No painting is completed by the artist. The viewer completes the creative process with his/her thoughts and feelings responding to each piece. I hope you find meaning in your participation in the creative act."

June Featured Artist

Art-is-in Market's featured artist for June is Susan Skibicki.

My photographs are created by photographing flowers on handmade paper to create a painterly effect. I have a strong background in painting and printing. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Michigan State University and a Master of Art Education from Wayne State University.

I am inspired by my love of flowers and nature. My main inspiration comes from my own Livonia garden. The garden has a wide array of flowers which includes sunflowers, lilies, daffodils, roses, passion flowers, calla lilies and wildflowers. Several bird feeding stations and flowering trees and bushes also add to my inspiration.

I teach in Dearborn. I try to take my love of art and nature into my classroom so my students can develop their own love of nature and continue to observe, enjoy, and help preserve nature and wildlife.

April Featured Artist

Art-is-in Market's featured artist for April is oil and acrylic painter Kerry DeCarlo.

Our multi-talent Australian transplant has always had an artistic bent. "I grew up on a farm and ever since I can remember I had a creative project of some sort to work on. I carved balsa wood and soft stone, made doll's clothes, knitted and embroidered, and wove string," she recalls. She has also been a hairdresser, a seamstress, and potter.

Painting is her most recent medium, only having taken it up after her retirement. She learned the basics at Schoolcraft College, but her most valuable instruction came from her next door neighbor. Electra Stamelos, a retired University of Michigan professor of art, gave her personal attention and guidance almost daily while she was learning her new craft.

Kerry has done commissioned portraits and murals, and exhibited at the Lotus Gallery in Plymouth, and the Berkowitz Gallery at the University of Michigan.
