April Featured Artist

Art-is-in Market's featured artist for April is oil and acrylic painter Kerry DeCarlo.

Our multi-talent Australian transplant has always had an artistic bent. "I grew up on a farm and ever since I can remember I had a creative project of some sort to work on. I carved balsa wood and soft stone, made doll's clothes, knitted and embroidered, and wove string," she recalls. She has also been a hairdresser, a seamstress, and potter.

Painting is her most recent medium, only having taken it up after her retirement. She learned the basics at Schoolcraft College, but her most valuable instruction came from her next door neighbor. Electra Stamelos, a retired University of Michigan professor of art, gave her personal attention and guidance almost daily while she was learning her new craft.

Kerry has done commissioned portraits and murals, and exhibited at the Lotus Gallery in Plymouth, and the Berkowitz Gallery at the University of Michigan.
